Global report on trafficking in Persons

Trafficking in Persons

The 2018 UNODC Global Report on Trafficking in Persons is the fourth of its kind mandated by the General Assembly through the 2010 United Nations Global Plan of Action to Combat Trafficking in Persons. It covers 142 countries and provides an overview of patterns and flows of trafficking in persons at global, regional and national levels, based primarily on trafficking cases detected between 2014 and 2016. As UNODC has been systematically collecting data on trafficking in persons for more than a decade, trend information is presented for a broad range of indicators.

Moreover, in December 2016 the Security Council requested the Secretary-General to take steps to improve the collection of data, monitoring and analysis of trafficking in persons in the context of armed conflict. In response, UNODC has prepared a booklet to provide special insight on this issue, published as booklet 2 of the Global Report. The analysis is based on an extensive desk review of available literature, court cases from the international criminal courts and tribunals and expert interviews with United Nations peacekeeping personnel. The result is an overview of trafficking in persons and its direct and indirect links to armed conflict.

In September 2017, UNODC (Crime Research Section) and the Dutch National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Human Beings launched a national estimate of the number of victims of trafficking in persons in the Netherlands, by sex, age, nationality (Dutch or non-Dutch) and form of exploitation. Produced with the multiple systems estimation (MSE) methodology, the publication of this estimate marks a leap forward in trafficking research and will pave the way for further studies in other countries in the years to come. Read the Research Brief (pdf).

In close cooperation with the countries concerned, and in partnership with Walk Free Foundation, UNODC has undertaken MSE studies for Ireland, Romania and Serbia. Please click on the country names to read/download (pdf files).
